Activities To Enjoy With the Butte County Historical Society

March Members' Meeting
90th Birthday of the 19th Amendment
The History of Achieving Voting Rights for Women
Sunday, March 21, 2010 at 2 pm in at the Ehmann Home (see Contact Information) - Public Welcome

"The women who fought for voting rights in the first part of the 20th century did not know if they would be successful, and yet they persevered - changing our democracy and society." Mary G. Wilson, LWV President

This month's program is brought to us by the League of Women Voters of Butte County and the Oroville AAUW. We'll enjoy a facinating feature length movie, "Iron Jawed Angels", an HBO Special starring Hillary Swank, Frances O"Connor, Julia Ormond, and Angelica Huston that tells the story of the struggle to attain voting rights for women. The movie will be followed by a discussion led by members of the League of Women Voters, mention of some notable women of Butte County, and a tea provided by members of the Oroville AAUW. It is an eye-opening program both women and men will enjoy and appreciate. Click here for a flyer with additional area activities.

Sutter Buttes Hike
Sunday, April 11, 2010

For our April Program we once again have the opportunity to hike in the Sutter Buttes, the world's smallest mountain range, as guests of the Middle Mountain Foundation. It is approximately 10 miles across and the Maidu Indians referred to it as "Esto Yamani", the Middle Mountains (yes, it really is not a butte). In the middle of the Buttes is Peace Valley, a very beautiful scene of natural beauty. Wouldn't you like to explore and learn more about this magical place?

Members of the Middle Mountain Foundation will be there to guide us and answer our quesions. There will be two levels of hikes, so don't worry if you aren't in tip top hiking form. The cost for members is $35 and for non-members is $40. Bring a sack lunch and water that you will carry with you. For more information and reservations, call 530-534-8145. Space is limited, so call early

The 9th Annual ISHI Gathering and Seminar
May 6 - 8, 2010
The mission of our event is to keep alive the story of Ishi, one of the last Yahi Indians.
We feel that Ishi's strength, adaptability and good humor teach us about our own common humanity and our own quest for grace and understanding.

Scholars, historians and the public will gather to honor the memory of Ishi in the location where Ishi chose to come out of the wilderness. The Butte County Historical Society will, once again, coordinate the Annual Ishi Gathering and Seminar. Our varied program activities appeal to all ages and draws participants out into the Butte County community. If you would like to be put on our mailing list for our 2010 Gathering, please email your informaion to buttehistory@sbcglobal.net.
